Complete Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy | Newcastle NSW
Period pain, or dysmenorrhoea, is known to affect up to 90% of menstruating adolescents and adults at some point in their lives. While mild discomfort is common, for many, menstrual pain can be debilitating – disrupting school, work, sleep, and daily function. Yet too often, young girls and women are told this pain is “just part of being female”.
At Complete Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, we believe otherwise. Pain that interferes with your life is not normal, and early assessment and care can make a profound difference.
What Causes Period Pain?
There are two main types:
- Primary dysmenorrhoea is pain without an identifiable pathology, typically beginning within 6–12 months of your first menstrual cycle or first period .
- Secondary dysmenorrhoea is caused by an underlying condition such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, or pelvic floor dysfunction.
Muscle tension, myofascial trigger points, visceral sensitivity, and poor pelvic floor coordination can all contribute to worsening period pain.
How Can Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Help?
Our approach is tailored to each individual and may include:
- Pelvic floor muscle assessment and release
- Visceral mobilisation (addressing uterine and abdominal mobility)
- Education on posture, bowel/bladder habits, and pain science
- Breathing and relaxation techniques to regulate the nervous system
- Supportive exercise programs designed to restore movement and confidence
A growing body of research supports the use of physiotherapy in managing dysmenorrhoea, particularly where pain is chronic or linked with pelvic dysfunction.
When to Seek Help
If your period pain:
- Keeps you from school, work, or social activities
- Doesn’t improve with over-the-counter medication
- Is accompanied by bowel or bladder changes, fatigue, or pelvic heaviness
…it’s time to talk to a healthcare professional. Early intervention can reduce long-term pain and prevent progression of conditions such as endometriosis.
